Hi, Savannah! It was really neat to read about how you decided to become a teacher. I noticed that you are passionate about creative writing. Would you say that you want your classroom to be centered on a more student driven model with writing at the helm?
That is a bit of a difficult question to answer, seeing as my response largely depends on what I end up teaching. I had a teacher in high school who taught two different subjects: Language Arts as a core class and Creative Writing as an elective, which allowed her to teach creative writing as a subject all of it's own. Therefore there wasn't much mixing of the two.
But I do like the idea of a student driven classroom. I had another teacher in High School that let us choose from a list of classics which book we would like to present on. Just that small amount of freedom made all the world of difference. We could choose something that we were interested in, instead of following a syllabus. As for creative writing, it has always had at least some measure of self driven style. Even when given a prompt, students still have the ability to express themselves in any way they wish.
Savannah, thanks for your questions! Reading your bio I love the fact you know it's very hard work to ever be published and talent alone won't guarantee much. Have you ever tried short stories to possibly send to magazines, web-sites, blogs and such?
I have sent smaller works such as short stories and poems off to published mediums. However my attention remains focused primarily on larger, novel-length works.
Hey, Savannah! It was great to read your biography and see the progression of your career goals! I have enjoyed having you in my classes and am so excited to work with you!
I know a lot about your love for writing and teaching, so my question is: what are your other interests? For instance, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
It's funny that you ask that- In my spare time I enjoy reading and writing! I spend most of my free time doing just that. But while those are my two biggest hobbies, I love hanging out with my friends, even if we don't do much while we're together.
Hi Savannah! I really enjoyed reading your biography! I understand that passion for writing and teaching combined. My question for you is what sort of genres do you like to read and write? Do you hope to write novels, short stories, poems, etc.?
Primarily I read and (attempt to) write novels, though I am fond of poetry as well. Unfortunately, I never felt as thought I got the hang of writing short stories. I've written one or two that I'm proud of, but every time I look them over I have the desire to lengthen them and take them further.
I love to write things that I know I would want to read for fun. Usually I stick to fantasy and fiction. The age group I write for varies: sometimes I like to write things for children that I know my siblings would enjoy, and at other times I write with a more mature audience in mind. It just depends on what story I happen to be working on at the time.
Hi! It's obvious that you have a true love for writing, but my question for you is do you have as much passion for reading, and if so who are some of your favorite authors or what has inspired you?
My senior year in high school I also got to help teach an English class. I loved the experience and often thought back on it when I was sitting at my desk trying to be engaged in the world of property management. Even though I was only two years older than the students in my class, I was shocked how readily accepting they were of what I had to offer for their understanding of the concepts addressed in class. What kind of activities did you get to lead in this class and what were the most important things you learned from the experience?
Hey Savannah, I was really impressed that your passion for teaching only grew after you found out how much work it will be! What made you want to teach high school as opposed to any other grade level?
Since I wanted to concentrate on writing, I knew I would have to go into secondary education or college level education. Middle school is a bit of a blur to me, but I remember enjoying my high school English classes very much. I may change my mind but that's where the desire originally came from.
Hello Savannah! My mom is also a principal, like your father. Being that you are surrounded by people in the education field, did you ever feel negatively pressured throughout school to live up to a certain standard when it came to getting good grades and such?
