I suppose knowing Spanish is quite useful when your family lives in Spain! I think it's wonderful that you decided to pursue what you were passionate about. How do you think your travels will affect the way you teach, concerning experience, dialects, and etc?
Knowing Spanish is very useful when being in Spain, but it is also overwhelming because I thought I knew a lot but then I realize I have a lot to learn! I think my travels will affect the way I teach in the fact that I will be able to share personal experiences about being immersed in the Spanish culture. I am excited to share things I have learned while being in Spain with students and I hope to motivate students to want to learn Spanish! I hope to teach from experience and be engaging.
Hey, Camille! I enjoyed meeting you at orientation and hearing about your Spanish adventures. Science is so hard (at least I think so) and it always surprises me when those of us who think it's going to be the way to go end up in the arts. This may be a bit of a stretch, but I fell in love with the entire idea of Honduras when I first read "Kisses from Katie." What would you say is your driving passion behind Spanish?
I enjoyed meeting you too! My driving passion behind Spanish is helping people. I have always had a passion for making the world a better place. Therefore, by learning another language it really expands the amount of lives I can impact.
Hello, Camille! It was great reading about your family. What an interesting history.
I just wanted to know: why do you think you lacked motivation in school and what do you feel brought it back? I'm glad your mother helped you out with that and I'm glad that ultimately you were able to succeed in school.
I think I lacked motivation starting in about 10th grade because I started arguing with my mom a lot, and I started getting grounded a lot and I felt as though there was no point in trying because I wasn't allowed to anything with my friends. But eventually I realized that I would not be allowed to go to the college of my choice if I didn't have HOPE, so I got my act together! Thank you and I'm glad too!
Hi Camille! I really enjoyed reading your biography and I look forward to getting to know you more. Since your family is currently living in Spain, do you have any plans to move there and teach abroad?
I look forward to getting to know you as well! Although I love Spain and the way of life there, I do not plan on ever living in Spain full time. It is a wonderful place and I love the language, but my friends and family live here in Georgia and I plan on staying close by, or at least live close enough to drive back if anything important happens!
Hello! I think that is so neat that your family was nearby when you went abroad. I am glad that you are pursuing Spanish. My question for you is about The Beatles. Do you like the movie Across the Universe? I am not a Beatles fan, so I am curious what a fan's take is on the film.
I love Across the Universe, one of my favorite movies! I think they did a great job of covering The Beatles songs and I believe that the members of the band who are no longer living would be extremely proud of the film, and I am sure that the band members still living are very proud. I think they did an excellent job on the movie! Do you like the movie?
I have always dreamed of joining the Peace Corps and being placed in South America, but I am not sure that this will ever happen. Although I would love to live in a Spanish speaking country such as Spain or South America, I am not sure that this is the right time in my life for that. Especially after being away from my mom and sister for so long, it's good to live near family and friends.
My favorite part about doing mission work in Honduras was interacting with the natives and seeing the smiles on their faces. They were truly hard working people who were extremely grateful for what they had and the help we were giving them. Aside from that I really enjoyed seeing the country and exploring.
I also spent some time in Seville last summer! What was your favorite part about it? I loved that it had just about everything all in one great city that wasn't too big or too small. It had history and more modern areas. A huge cathedral, bull fighting, soccer team, a river, and it was conveniently close to the beach! I'm obviously still in love with it, and I hope to return someday soon! I'm also glad to hear there is another Spanish teacher in our program!
I agree with you, my favorite part about Sevilla was that it wasn't to big or too small. I loved the environment and being able to walk everywhere. I also loved the river and the street along the river! It was a great all around experience and I am also glad to see that there is another Spanish person!!
Hey, Camille! Your family sounds so interesting, and I really enjoyed reading about them! Do you think that your mom working in education has influenced your decision to teach?
I do believe that my mom has influenced the fact that I am wanting to become a teacher. Although growing up, I remember saying...I will never be a teacher! I used to hate how my mom was so involved with my school work and knew all my teachers, but I have had a change of heart. My mom has shown me that you can positively impact people through teaching, and that's exactly what I want to do.
I have loved them since I can remember! My dad really likes music so I grew up listening to bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. Although those are all amazing bands, The Beatles have always appealed to me. I love their style of music and it always lifts my spirits. I have also had a fascination with John Lennon and I actually got to see Paul McCartney in concert a few years back and that was one of the highlights of my life! My sisters and mom and I also went to see the studio where The Beatles used to record their music at in London, so I guess you could say I am kind of obsessed!
Nice, I was only kidding of course. The Stones are my favorites, but I know I sit in the minority there. Ze Beatles usually top the Stones and Zepp. You saw Abbey Road??? Really cool!
I have always admired people who could speak other languages. I studied French but was never able to become fluent and I always felt that I could have been had I been surrounded by the language through travel. Do you think fluency can be achieved without immersion? How do you plan on using your experience to drive home flunency and culture with your students?
I do believe that fluency can be achieved without immersion, but that would be extremely difficult. I studied Spanish for 8 years before I traveled to Spain and I felt as though I was not nearly prepared as I should be. Although Spanish classes are beneficial, immersion is truly the best way to learn a language. I plan on sharing stories and pictures with students in order to allow them to get a good picture of what it is like to live in a Spanish speaking country. I hope to inspire students to want to study abroad or just travel to Spanish speaking countries as my high school Spanish teacher inspired me.
Hey Camille, I can definitely relate to having a passion for travel and experiencing the world- I think a lot of us in this cohort can! I also enjoyed playing sports in high school, do you think you will want to coach once you become a teacher?
I would enjoy coaching, I have taught swim lessons and swam for many years so I would really enjoy coaching swim team. Coaching would be a good experience once I get the whole teaching thing under control.
Hola Camille, I thought that it was cool that you came from a mixed family-- with your adopted and fostered siblings. Do you think that people in the United States would benefit from adopting/fostering children? Ojala que podriamos hablar en espanol en el futuro! Tu experiencia en Honduras fue muy impresionante. What aspect of life in Honduras would cement your decision to stay in Honduras?
