Questions for Katherine

  1. I'm sorry you had such difficulties about decided what to do with your life. It's such a daunting decision, but I'm glad you finally found what you wanted to do.
It sounds as though you have settled on being a language arts teacher, but I was curious if you would ever be interested in teaching a class like the political systems that so interested you in law in the first place.

    1. I actually am concentrating in Political Science! My first choice would be to teach a class exactly like my political systems class in high school. However, I plan on taking the GACE in English as well, just to keep my options open!

  2. Hello, Katherine! As someone who also REALLY loves political science (shhh, it's a secret) and also wanted to be a lawyer at one point, I commend you for riding the wave and being okay with the ups and downs of life. You mentioned that you want a family, so being a lawyer was not ideal. Was that the only thing holding you back?

    1. Hi, Hannah! Yay for another poli sci lover! Wanting a family of my own was definitely not the only thing holding me back from law school. The money and time commitment also turned me away. I couldn't justify spending so much money and three years of my life on something that I wasn't sure I even wanted a career in.

  3. Hey, Katherine! Reading about your academic journey was very interesting; I especially enjoyed hearing about the progression of your career goals and how they changed.

My question to you is: what type(s) of dancing did you do? Ballet? Tap? Something else?

Also, what are your favorite kinds of books to read?

    1. Hi, Bri! I did all of the above! I did tap, ballet, and jazz. Tap was definitely my favorite and my strongest type of dance! Also, I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan, and I think they will always be my favorite books!

    1. Hey Allison! I would definitely consider it! I think that would be awesome. I have also thought about being a swim coach as well.

  5. Hello! I also grew up in Gwinnett County, but I went to North Gwinnett. My question is what are your favorite types of books? Also, what was your favorite part about being a lifeguard?

    1. Hey, Shamiah! One of my good friends went to North Gwinnett, I wonder if you know each other! I am a huge Harry Potter fan, but I also like John Grisham books. I also love the classic books that get taught in schools. As far as lifeguarding, my favorite part was probably feeling confident in my abilities to save a person!

    1. Hey, Abbey! As of now, I actually don't plan on moving back to Gwinnett to teach. I see myself somewhere between Milledgeville and home, but outside of the metro-Atlanta bubble!

  9. Katherine, I laughed reading your bio since I'm currently re-reading Common Sense by Thomas Paine. I love the beginnings of america, the declaration, bill of rights, constitution, etc and love almost every single one of the fore-fathers. I too, was going to go to law school. If you are still questioning your choice, let me tell you, most of my friends who went don't like being lawyers. I'm so thankful I didn't go. Anyway, who is your favorite revolutionary writer? I have to say Jefferson is the best, but Paine is my favorite. JF

    1. Ahhh, those are all of the things I love too!! I could talk about the bill of rights for hours. That's awesome that we have so much in common. I think I'll be thankful that I did not go to law school as well. And I'd have to say that either Hamilton or Madison is my favorite because I really enjoyed reading The Federalist Papers. Although, I agree with you in that Jefferson, being the genius that he was, was probably the best!

  10. I was always pushed by my family to study law, and I think I found a bit of a kindred spirit in you! I loved learning about law, especially the contract side of it, but knew that practicing it was never my cup of tea. I actually got to experience it first hand anyway writing contracts for vendors and tenants in the office buildings that I helped manage. It's not nearly as fun as it sounds, and it sounds pretty dry to begin with.
You mentioned that you still have shy moments. I'm in the same boat too. What are some tactics you plan on using to overcome those moments to teach a class full of kids?

    1. Hey, Hillary! That's awesome that we have something in common! My shy moments always come from a lack of self-confidence. As I've gotten older, I've become more confident, and therefore less shy. What has really helped me is actually my faith. When I have a moment where I feel unsure, I remember that with God we can do anything! I think that will really help me when I'm teaching.

  11. Hey Katherine, awesome bio! I can definitely relate to being shy, and even more so to loving Jersey Mikes! We have one back home in Alpharetta and its always the first place I go when I go home. I also enjoy swimming, but just for fun and not on a team- I was always the slowest person on the summer team I swam with haha what would you say is your favorite part about swimming?

    1. When I was on the high school swim team, I really loved my teammates. They were some of my best friends during high school, and one of them still is. But to be honest, I love how much food swimming allows you to eat! Swimming is such great exercise, and I remember eating like I was a 30 year old man and never having to worry about it. Boy, do I miss those days!

  13. I thought about, as a sophomore here at GC, to make political science one of my minors, but the reason I decided against it was because there were so many great policies put in place, written, etc. and yet there is so much corruption and ignorance of those laws. How would you teach political science in a way to make kids aware but keep it positive? Because it is important stuff and we do need game changers in the political world in the future, but, like you said it is not easy.

  14. Hi Katherine,
You mentioned in your bio that you grew up dancing until high school. What genres did you dance? I teach a Salsa class on Fridays if you are interested in getting back into it.

Also, I liked how you were so honest about your decision to pursue teaching with your political science degree. I think that it is wise to keep exploring passion, I'm sure the kids will love you.
With so many teens being corrupted by harmful influences in middle school and high school, what would be one way that you use your knowledge of political science to influence them for the better?
