It was interesting to read how the month you are born could determine your success, like with the hockey players. The reading gave me a better understanding of why there is an age cut off for many things, not only school but sports as well.
I also found this interesting. I think that players are limited because of this. I think the only reason players chosen in the 1st three months of the year are chosen is because they are closer to the next age and may have physically developed more advanced than other players however I personally believe that if more times were spent with other players they could be just as talented as the other players born Jan-March.
I feel as thou this extra support should extend beyond just those who are born within these months and to all players who desire to exceed. Given the same opportunity I honestly believe any player could be successful giving the opportunity to.
Kourtney that's a valid point! Extra support should be provided for ALL. Not just a select few or those who are deemed talented and gifted. Students perform to the expectation. If we as teachers expect greatness, with no opt out, we are likely to have more successful students.
It is crazy to me how large the gap is between students who have a head start vs. students that start off on the wrong foot. This module really hit me! Basically all successes have been calculated down to the right place at the right time. Circumstances are essentially everything.
I completely agree Jazzmine! It's crazy to think of everything being a game of chance... if my parents would have been just a little more lax on grade then maybe I wouldn't have striven for success and gone to college? Or maybe if I'd have been born a year earlier my parents wouldn't have had the means to help me in the way that they did to get me where I am.
How is the Matthew Effect directly related to students living in poverty in your schools and schools here in central GA? What factors contribute to their successes or failures?
I definitely think the Matthew Effect relates to students in this area because it is a lower-class area in terms of wealth. I know through tutoring at BHS that many of these students aren't given the help at home or the encouragement to succeed. Higher education isn't something that these kids have been taught to strive for (not all of the students here by any means, but I definitely knew a lot that never anticipated going to school) and a lot of this is probably due to the fact that college was accessible financially. I think this ultimately leads to the failures of some of these students-if I were never pushed to do well in school in order to go to college, would I have gone?
I think that is that is so true Savannah. Students here are told to go to college, but many of them aren't really pushed or encouraged to go by their parents or communities at home, therefore they really don't seek out higher education thus remaining stagnant in their learning.
Grouping students by age is something that is done in schools; grade levels are originally based on what year and month you were born. I think it is beneficial because it's grouping based on maturity and development. However, it has to be frustrating for the students that fall just after that deadline because they're pushed a year back and will ultimately be more mature than their classmates in later schooling years.
Savannah that is most DEFINITELY true! I think the cut-off date here is September 6 and my birthday is September 9. When my mother registered me for school I was almost admitted until it was realized my birthday was 3 days after the cut-off date thus I had to wait another year before starting.
I read somewhere once that every child needs at least one adult that is irrationally crazy ab him/her. I immediately thought ab the Termite study and how enthralled he was with these children. If I view my students w such admiration, I wonder what effect that would have.
Its important to just be upfront about the fact that some students wont have the best means to gain success. That does not mean that all hope is lost though. Students have a tendency to see unfairness and feel discouraged, but I think letting students know that smarts are cultivated. Working your hardest may not close the gap but it will still be better than no progress at all.
That is very true and important! I think it's important that we stress to students that success may be far and even seem unnoticeable at times, but with persistent dedication long term success is the ultimate reward not just present. This can be very difficult to convince students who are on the low end of society socioeconomically.
I don't like this idea that if you don't get ahead from the beginning that you're not going to be successful. I think it would be especially significant to make sure students know that they still have an opportunity to succeed like the rest of the peers no matter their current level. What can we as educators do to circumvent the Matthew Effect in our classrooms? Something I thought of was to make sure to pre-assess student knowledge prior to starting a new unit. It's important to know where each student stands to make sure you level the playing field and allow all students the opportunity to success.
Learning about the Matthew Effects made me realize how privileged I have been in my education without knowing it. I was pushed from the start by my parents and educations with failure not being an option. I didn't necessarily have all the means I may have needed by was never let to believe that my lack of means equated to my abilities. I don't like the point that intelligence is something we are born with or is inherited from our parents instead of something we work toward. Yes, some students may pick up on things easier and at a faster rate, however that doesn't mean that the students who take more time should be left behind to fail.

DeleteI agree if more time was spent with other players, especially those who only missed the cut off date by a few days, they would be just as good
