I thought it was interesting that the frontal lobes are not fully mature until around 22-24. I assumed at least by the age of 18 they would have been matured.
The brain fascinates me! It truly does. After so much talk about the brain, I plan on researching a bit further when I have the time to. I never knew that so much goes on in our heads.
I think society as a whole has been miseducated about brain development. I think the majority of society thinks kids are fully developed by the age of 18 and are quick to judge them on stupid mistakes they make. I think the juvenile justice system most definitely could use more expert advice dealing with juvenile delinquency.
Being aware of your students emotions is very important with teaching. Many students handle there emotions differently, some you can easily see or sense there emotions, but some you can't. It is important to be aware so it will not affect the students work or cause them to shut down and not want to do anything
It is almost like we have to be more in touch with their senses than they are. Adolescent brains are phenomenal. They have the capacity to perform incredibly complicated tasks yet they operate without very much reason or logic at all.
I find this to be difficult as well, like how do I handle that?!? I think like w most other strategies that we have discussed. It all comes down to developing a relationship w the student.
I just looked back through my module. Sousa reminds readers in Chapter 2 that behavior is LEARNED and the rules of appropriate behavior MUST be taught. Sousa elaborates further by saying that ".. they must be taught thoroughly so that the developing frontal lobe can build the knowledge base that will help it exercise restraint on impulsive emotional responses." (Sorry no page number I have an ebook and cant locate the page quoted)
I imagine that teaching these skills are would be extremely difficult considering having other students and other students that may have ieps & learning disorders. I wonder if school counselors are trained to provide students with reinforcements that would help them with managing these disorders in the classroom?
CPS was difficult for me to make it through the first time. Since it is designed to 'repeat when necessary', I wonder how many times is sufficient before I assume it is time to move on to some of Sousa's strategies.

DeleteRight, some may not even be aware that their emotions have changed due to stress or things they are going through
DeleteHow do you think you would handle a student who has persistent impulsive behavior?

ReplyDeleteI would say at least two times, but no more than three
DeleteWhen a student has a phobia or anxiety, what is the best way to handle that situation?
ReplyDeleteI would try slowly introducing or exposing the student to the phobia and then over time expose them longer to try and help them reduce their fear.
DeleteI agree, slowly introduce them to it but don't force them to do it. Encrouage them to try and overcome their phobia, but be patient with them about it
